Fashion DIY Tutorial: Handmade Denim Corset Belt - Fashion Blog: DIY - Outfits, Shoes & Accessories
In my last DIY project “An Old Denim Jacket As A Bolero” the lower part remained of the denim jacket. From this fabric remnant I have made a corsage belt (or bodice).
Material And Tools – For This DIY Project You Need
- Sewing kit or sewing machine
- Seam ripper
DIY Tutorial: The Step-By-Step Craft Instructions
DIY Step 1 Put On The Denim Part
Turn the denim part inside out and wear it in front of the mirror while the button bar is on your back.
DIY Step 2 Fix The Appropriate Circumference
Fix the appropriate circumference with pins, then unbutton the “corset” and take it off.
Sewing tip for beginners: Select the position “Straight Stitch” for the best way of sewing. So, if something got too close, you just can remove the seams and make a new sewing.
DIY Step 3 Sew Along The Pins
Sew along the pins. Then cut the fabric to about 1 cm from the seam. Seam the borders to prevent a fraying of the fabric.
DIY Step 4 Sew The Upper Edge Provisionally
Provisionally sew the upper edge with thread and needle. The bottom hem has a slightly darker wash (cause of the removed waist band). As I wanted this look, I didn’t seam this edge. If you don’t like it, even sew the bottom hem temporarily.
One More Tip
Sewing Tip: To sew thick or multi-layer fabrics (such as jeans) put some remnants under the presser foot as a “bridge”. Thus the thick fabric easily can be sewed from the beginning.
DIY Step 5 Sew The Hem
Sew the hem with the sewing machine or by hand.
DIY Step 6 Remove The Provisional Seams
Now it’s time to remove the provisional seams with a seam ripper.
DIY Tutorial – Final Result “Handmade Denim Corset Belt”
Here you see the final result. I was pleased by the “bow tie”-pin as decoration well fitting the “Sailor” look. As already mentioned, I liked the dark wash, so I didn’t seam my corset at the bottom.Copyright: fashion.onblog.at and Michael Punzenberger (Publications of photos or text are not allowed.
